Living in a New Location Changed My Life for the Better

I was really excited when I learned that my dad had earned the chance to be the manager who runs the overseas division of his company and we were moving to Singapore. At first, I wondered if we would live in one of the tiny apartments that are so popular there. I soon learned that we would be living at the New Futura in Singapore, which is an amazing building to live in. I was proud of my dad for doing so well, and I felt like a lucky girl to have such luxury in life. Most people my age do not have the good fortune of finishing out high school in another country.

Back home, I hung around a lot of people who were pretty snobby. I didn’t purposely set out to be friends with the most popular kids in school. I simply tried to be myself, and somehow I ended up with the in-crowd. I found that most of them were obsessed with clothing, celebrities and acting cool. I also found that none of them had their sights set on getting into the best colleges after school. None of them knew what they wanted to do with their lives. I had been looking for a way to get away from them for some time. When dad told me that we were moving, I was grateful. I ended up spending my last two years of high school in a new country, and I focused on getting good grades.

During my last year of high school, I realized that I didn’t want to go back home to the US to go to a university there. I wanted to stay where I was. I applied to a local university and gained admission soon after. During my last year in college, I spent part of the year doing an internship with my dad’s company. As soon as I graduated, I was hired full time there. Moving away from the life I used to live has been good for me and my family.
