MIT's commitment from its inception in 1861 is to turn the unknown into the known, and theory into practice. As its founder William Barton Rogers promised, It is committed to the "... development and practical application of science in connection with arts agriculture, manufactures and commerce". Its commitment to research, teaching and developing leading edge technology has been its hallmark. MIT is preeminent in technological innovation and invention. In that spirit, the Media Laboratory, founded in 1985, carries on advanced research into a broad range of information technologies including digital television, holographic imaging, computer music, computer vision, electronic publishing, artificial intelligence, human/machine interface design, and education-related technologies. In addition, the Media Lab has devoted many resources to research about children and technology. The Media Lab's interest in hosting the Junior Summit '98 is a natural outgrowth of such research.
The Junior Summit staff combines the talents of research and technological expertise with communications, administrative, and organizational professionals, all of whom have come together to form the working team. Each person on the team is highly regarded in their field and contributes significantly to every aspect of the development, and implementation of Junior Summit '98.
